Are Free VPNs Safe? How to Tell the Good From the Dangerous
Published Oct 13, 2026 · Last updated Oct 13, 2026
Safe free VPNs are funded transparently by paid tiers - Proton VPN, Windscribe, hide.me, TunnelBear and PrivadoVPN all publish who owns them and how the free tier is paid for.
Danger signs: no named company, no privacy policy, unlimited-everything promises, and app-store permissions that have nothing to do with networking.
VPNUS only lists free plans from providers with a verifiable company, jurisdiction and privacy policy.
