Residential vs Datacenter Proxies Explained

Every proxy IP comes from somewhere, and where it comes from determines what it's good for.
Datacenter proxies
These IPs belong to hosting companies (AWS, OVH, dedicated proxy hosts). They're fast, cheap (a few dollars a month per IP, or fractions of a cent per request) and abundant — but every anti-bot system knows the IP ranges belong to datacenters. Fine for accessing sites without aggressive protection, internal testing, or high-volume scraping of tolerant targets.
Residential proxies
These IPs belong to real consumer internet connections, sourced from ISP partnerships or opt-in SDK networks. To a website, the request looks like a home user in that city — which is why they cost per gigabyte ($1.50–$8/GB) and why serious scraping, ad verification, sneaker and travel-fare work runs on them. Ethical sourcing matters: reputable providers (Decodo, IPRoyal, Bright Data, Oxylabs, SOAX) document how they acquire IPs and run compliance programs.
Mobile and ISP proxies
Mobile proxies use carrier IPs (hardest to block, most expensive). ISP proxies are datacenter-hosted IPs registered under consumer ISPs — a hybrid: datacenter speed with residential-looking registration.
Choosing
Match the proxy to the defense level of the target: datacenter for easy targets and raw speed, residential for protected consumer sites, mobile for the hardest cases. And for ordinary private browsing, none of these — that's a VPN's job.
