VPN vs Proxy: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

A VPN and a proxy both route your traffic through another server, so websites see that server's IP address instead of yours. The similarity ends there.

What a VPN does

A VPN encrypts every connection your device makes — browsers, apps, background services — inside a tunnel your ISP and local network can't read. Good VPNs add a kill switch, DNS leak protection and audited no-logs policies. That makes VPNs the right tool for privacy on untrusted networks, for getting a foreign IP across all your apps, and for restrictive networks (with obfuscation).

What a proxy does

A proxy forwards traffic for one application — usually a browser or a scraper — without system-wide encryption. HTTP/SOCKS5 proxies are configured per app; nothing else on the device is affected. That's exactly what you want for web automation, market research, sneaker bots, SEO rank tracking or managing many accounts, where per-request IP rotation matters more than encryption.

The quick decision

Choose a VPN when a human is browsing and privacy matters: one encrypted IP, all apps covered, flat monthly price. Choose proxies when software is browsing at scale: thousands of rotating IPs, per-gigabyte pricing, no encryption needed because the traffic itself is ordinary web requests.

Free public proxy lists are shared, unaccountable infrastructure — never send logins, cookies or personal data through them.
